  • Robby Benson and 70’s Movies

    http://every70smovie.blogspot.com/2011/07/one-on-one-1977.html

He was too “goofy” (Jeremy) to take really seriously by many of us in the 70’s. Maybe it is the women in his films who account for his success, and success he definitely had from 1972 until 1978. It started with Jeremy and ended with California Girls (1985); in between were Ode to Billy Joe, One on One, and Ice Castles. If you paste Glyniss O’Connor in between (The Boy in the Plastic Bubble and California Dreaming), it is a feast for Mr. Hanson at the first link above.

I like the scale on Every 70s Movie–1-5 with an extra category for movies that are don’t miss even if they appear unappealing. Four out of 5 is pretty good, but I would move Jeremy up to Right On. I did not like “Boy” but it was fun to know it; Ode turned me off with the accents right from the start, so I’d lower those. Otherwise, I tend to agree with his ratings. While he is very good and always worth the effort (“wispy” for Jeremy is spot on), I don’t sometimes agree with his wording. I’m not here to criticize or attempt to out-verbalize anyone. I agree with his overall takes and realize he is picking apart films for professional and insider reasons.

Now I am halfway through watching Ice Castles (1978). I have learned that promotion does have a big impact, particularly on teens or at the moment. People in the 70’s didn’t have the internet for instant downloads as well as forty years of since-then perspective. Lynne-Holly Johnson is eye-candy–they don’t put you on those now-maligned promo posters unless people want to see you and I remember her as Bibi the rejected Bond girl too. When she throws herself at Mr. Benson as is sure to happen, I’ll like it, but more to the point, it will be central to the film. I don’t even know what is going on but it looks a lot like The Cutting Edge franchise; I’ll put it in a loop as we say now, and catch up later. Johnson and Benson in the truck was magic. No one lasts long in their prime–the 70’s–so you have to soak it up while you can. Of course there are more titles and the principals have accomplished much, much more, but these are the only films I could find quickly online.

I am reminded as I watch that these are coming of age movies, my favorite genre. The genre spans history, but the injection of love is unique to the 1970’s. At least, it has not been repeated since. Each of these movies is about not just an injection of love, but the theme of it, as motivation.

It is relevant that Mr. Hanson has devoted a category, like “music” for women’s issues. The women alongside Benson are all gorgeous, independent, and ambitious. Each brings not just respect and admiration, and here’s that taboo, too simple word again, but love.

In Ice Benson looks better–more grown up. Women like whatever her name is in the movie do not come around very often, and why did she say “I love you” crying on the telephone? Movies like this are gems, and they seem to be a lot more common in the 70’s.

Jeremy is the best of the bunch. Without checking the web for anything else, just concentrating on the films themselves, I confirmed Benson (Jan ’56) and O’Connor (Nov ’55) were both 16 years old when they made it. I think it is near flawless. It is about falling in love. It is perfectly executed from start to finish. Benson is very good even with nerdy tendencies and O’Connor is outstanding. Their maturity, understanding, and enactment of such a complex subject is stunning. They are both, each of them, excited and understated at the same time, a rarity and a virtue at any age.

Ice Castles fell off a cliff, but I was right about the magic in Ms. Johnson.

I really enjoyed the few days I spent on Robby Benson history. The too-lucky-to-be-true Robby Benson lived up to his major billing of the 70’s.

  • The Spring Game

Maybe Google is punishing me. I always use an ad blocker.

Blogger/blogspot won’t work (mgoblogging.blogspot.com). But now I can log out (that is fixed). It’s Google and I have had it for about 20 years, so it will probably work soon.

Surprisingly I enjoy listening to the game. There isn’t a lot of live or game-day information on it and that is probably a good thing. Every team does it and they are just a public practice. Don’t read too much from them.

That youtube link is weird in that you cannot download it. So I was looking for a full video, can’t find one, but hit on what I hoped was a live or new Reddit thread. I don’t want to touch mgoblog message board (the place for news) until I make up my own mind. Per Reddit, “What is the point of the Spring Game?” The answer is a chance to hear the names of the players still around and other new ones who are good enough or have enough potential to make the field. If watching the video it will only look amateurish with the empty stands and identical uniforms on both sides. The audio works well.

They’ve been talking about Davis Warren for a while now. 17-7 6:00 left in the fourth quarter. It is hard to tell the quarter–save for the big clock on the screen and stats and stuff are of no interest, as is the score. Maize is leading Blue. They said he (Warren) “rifled” one for a TD. That is good news because the passing game aside from Colston Loveland is a question mark.

My prediction was Jack Tuttle. Alex Orji, Jayden Denegal and Jadyn Davis seem to be the names with Warren.

Pig Harbaugh, the guy who abandoned his team and alma mater, left a decent good team behind.

Donovan Edwards created some Wow in the beginning. Fredrick Moore made a play. Chesson, there’s a finding! Jehu Chesson’s brother added as a graduate transfer. Four Michigan receivers are in the portal. They keep saying Jyaire Hill as the other cb and I’m learning spelling. Orji running; that is not a surprise. Orji and Warren are playing a lot.

Losing the entire offensive line could hurt; who knows, all these guys have been around forever and are top recruits. They are definitely going to miss Roman Wilson, Cornelius Johnson and the passing of J.J. McCarthy.

Now they’re saying Orji is “not bad” as a passer. Denegal, pause, pause means not good. Warren pointing (?) they say. Freshman Davis another pause and no comment.

Remember Harbaugh? He inherited a good team and then found Jake Ruddock as an immediate grad transfer to make it an excellent team. Such a portal move was still rare nine years ago. Then he and the team made do–improved a lot–with the eventual baby Cade McNamara at the helm. In between there was Shea Patterson, a big get who didn’t live up. Finally, Harbaugh recruited and groomed McCarthy for a national championship.

Quarterback is key. I was able to download some youtube videos; I’m curious if Orji looks better and capable all-around.

There are a number of new names. But again, they’re all via Harbaugh.

Will Sherrone Moore be just another Juwan Howard, meaning he does well with what he inherited but he cannot do it himself?

The Braves are on. Live, with HD video. You can’t miss them right from the beginning. I must pay attention when Ronald Acuna (jr with squiggly line) is on the screen or mentioned. He stole third! Marcell Ozuna is one of the best hitters in baseball right now. Bases loaded and no score. Maybe next inning.

C’mon, blogspot. I want to post this for my many fans on MgoBlogging!

I had a hard time finishing. I skimmed the last 10-12 paragraphs. It is interesting, it contains tidbits worth learning from an experienced and knowledgeable veteran of NPR. My government commissioner is a veteran of NPR! Just thought I’d throw that in.

It is well written, more so than 90% of what you read online. It is not perfect–I don’t think I missed anything major in the last dozen or so paragraphs. It seemed a little like ranting at that point.

I clicked on the Washington Post Hunter Biden link and didn’t quite see the laptop conclusions he reached. That makes me a little suspicious, and his survey/demographic findings are a little iffy too. So I’m thinking maybe he could have made his point better. I agree that NPR has really slipped in terms of useful knowledge.

The only real reason he gives for it other than a bad ceo is endless diversity training. That I agree with can be overdone, particularly if there isn’t a severe problem.

The CEO with the nefarious agenda who wouldn’t meet with him is gone. Maybe he thought that would save him. He was suspended but not fired. So he quit. There are worse things.

(This was a diversion, albeit not particularly worthwhile one. Today I found out by email my mother died and that my brother isn’t going be very helpful.)

  • Kouri Richins Revisited

282 Willow Court in Kamas, Utah is a million dollar house many people would not want to live in. I would not want to live there. It is a weird place, with the full basketball court crammed into the backyard, the soccer goal, the dog kennels and all the stonework representing C&S Stone Masonry. The fences and stones are right against the property lines, as are the garages.

Nothing, not the pines, aspen, or green grass grows naturally. It is sagebrush country. How and why the home prices are rising so fast is a mystery. 279 Willow Court sold less than five years ago for $560,000 and is now worth almost a million too. The homes don’t have large lots and there is nothing from stopping the open space from development.

So often these stories begin with a montage about a perfect situation. It is not an idyllic or perfect place at all. The families are not like that either. Overriding it all is this feeling that you are supposed to fit in.

I feel as if I have done this before.

Summit County (Park City) is one of or the least Mormon counties in Utah but the population is only 43,000. The LDS church in Kamas is a large and imposing building with a giant parking lot. You cannot see it in the many pictures of the Richins house, but it is just beyond one of the neighborhoods or yet to be developed fields. While it was always scrub or wasteland, now it is ultra developed.

There is another huge building in Kamas called the Richins Building. Eric Richins’ family is large and well-known in the area. Their 160-acre homestead settled in the 1860’s is nearby.

It is the gateway to Utah and Salt Lake City. That is what Summit County and Echo Pass is known for.

In the 1860s we jumped the pond to America and landed in Utah. From there we worked our way south to Arizona, New Mexico, and Mexico.

  • I need to pause it it is so good. Bloodlines Murder in the Family is the amorphous title. 1993 is or was historically the date. Mimi Rogers is gorgeous and a much better actress than (see below).

“Mom, we’re not poor” says the teen representing the noble family.

“I hate to break it to you, but we are poor.”

She is starting a job as a cocktail waitress/singer/diva. She is cleaning out the closet to sell clothes. Elliott Gould is no use at all.

OMG, there’s my car. That’s one way to endear me. Ms. Rogers was very good–Lifetime and Christmas disclaimer–in the Christmas List (1997).

I don’t know. I thought Telling Secrets (also 1993) was great; then I saw it panned online. Oh well, it was suspenseful even though I knew the story, and I enjoyed it. Cybill Shepherd, well, there was a strong supporting cast.

  • For an Attorney

Note: This has been started and tried about a hundred times. The objective is a concise version.

I am going to start with three lessons from the Pam Hupp crimes.

    1. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yT7JqzRTxlg – “Faith in the justice system and authority figures… There is no faith anymore.” They blame innocent people trying to help them.
    2. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w_R-pDbOnRY “There’s a term for it, it’s called gaslighting… supremely arrogant.”
    3. There is a third and even fourth video (most newswriting has been turned into videos). At the moment they elude me. Perhaps it has to do with the conclusion for the Farias, a $2 million color of law victory. The third one is the wiki post: It is either “gross negligence or “calculated criminal behavior””.

The current sheriff has been with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department since before Ted Mink. These were the first two smoking guns. The third was a 2023 letter from Carla Zinanti, longtime Animal Control director.

This is the year things came to a head and Mr. Mink cracked.

It is an indication of how the department works and why they cannot hire properly.
