The Kursk Invasion

I’m listening to the three Hudson Institute experts on Sunday. That would be Monday in the part of the world where it is actually occurring. The news today hasn’t been anything new. The best European channels–DW, Sky, and France 24 are just repeating themselves.

I made up my own mind beforehand, anyway. Nothing is perfect nor probably brilliant. It is an incredible feat and the best that could be done; so, brilliant in colloquial language.

Since I’ve been working in law this week, and sometimes thinking like a lawyer, I’ll make my case.

  1. It is risky. Troops and supplies are scarce for Ukraine. Russia has to and will put everything they have into removal and retaliation.
  2. It worked. They’re in. After a week (assuming one more day), they are still there.

The area in Kursk is 1,000 square kilometers or 386 square miles. It will possibly to grow to about 40×40 sq km or 620 sq miles. That is about 25 miles by 25 miles.

It will be a big distraction and embarrassment for Russia until they leave.

As of the minute, 121,000 people evacuated from the Kursk region (Smirnov). Then there is Belgorod (old estimate 11,000); current online estimate is up to 180,000 total.
